CHRIS LIVE AKA SHAKER SAYS: Whilst I truly, truly appreciate the introductory holiday season sales that are, now, part and parcel of our national celebration of Columbus Day, it would be criminally negligent of me to not recognize the dastardly depopulation of Native peoples that his "discovery" of the Americas meant for millions.
Was he just an ambitious Italian explorer who, after convincing Queen Isabella of Castile and King Ferdinand of Aragon of Spain to back his journey to find new spice routes to the West Indies, took 4 voyages to these new lands and always missed his mark OR was he the ruthless mass-murderer whose colonization efforts included handing out small pox laced blankets to unsuspecting Native Americans and watched them die by the thousands. Well, the answer is that he is both.
To My Italian Friends: Far be it from me to begrudge Y.O.U. your banquet of calzones and pasta washed down with lemon ciello on this holiday. Hey, I get it ... he's your pisan ... lol. However, the duality of man must allow Y.O.U. to feel great sympathy for the millions of indigenous peoples that were brutally murdered by legions of Europeans beginning in 1492. Remember: There are always 3 sides to a story - yours, mine and the truth. This is Livestyle.
